Learning To Play Tennis

As is true with many sports, tennis requires constant practice if you want to improve. You may believe that you have the skills to become the next great player, but you need to practice incessantly if you want to be effective on the court. A daily practice routine is a must, as well as a strong sense of duty and loyalty to the game.

Your first step is to find a good set of courts in your area. Look for more than just a nice place to store your stuff. Make sure the court surface is kept up and that the nets are free of holes and tears.

Make sure to spend at least 15 minutes stretching before you begin practice, and again afterward. Doing so will help prevent muscle cramps and injuries during your practice session.

You should select clothing that is comfortable and appropriate. Avoid clothing that fits too tightly or holds too much sweat, as this may become a distraction during the match. Tennis is about keeping your focus, and uncomfortable clothing will destroy that focus.

Before you begin playing, you should also warm up your shots. If you have a practice partner, then warm up with that person. Begin with some simple volleys at the net, and work your way back to the baseline. As your muscles loosen up, you can start adding in more difficult shots to get your feet moving and increase your reaction times.

For further motivation, have a friend keep score as you have a practice match with your partner. This will help make you more competitive as well as get you in the right mindset before you have a real match. Practice games are the best way to prepare for a tennis match physically and mentally.

If you practice alone, you can place orange cones on the other side of the net. Now, each time you hit a shot, aim to hit the cones. You can place them at easy spots to start with, and go on to place them at spots that are more difficult later on during the training session.

Of course, your most important piece of equipment is the racket. You should always use the same racket for both practice and regular match play. Your racket should simply feel like an extension of your body, a sensation that happens only if you use the same racket on a routine basis. Changing back and forth between rackets will destroy your consistency.

If you follow these tips and keep up the practice, then you should see your tennis game improve dramatically.
