In spite of everything, his age of twenty nine reveals that he’s getting up there in years.

With the Australian Open kicking off the new 2010 tennis year, the action is officially back. There are many players rounding out a field that finds itself more competitive than it’s been in quite a few years.

While recent years seemingly belonged to Federer and Nadal and their classic rivalry with one another, there are a few more players in the mix who should pose a threat to them both.

Though Federer and Nadal occupy the top two spots in the world, there are a few players who could end up the year ranked at number one. Let’s take a look at the most likely finishers now.

Obviously, there’s Roger Federer. He should always be considered the favorite to finish at the top of the rankings, as he’s done so nearly every year during the course of the last decade. Still, his age of 29 means he’s getting up there in years.

If we rewind by a few years in the women’s tennis world, we’ll arrive at a time where Justine Henin was the world’s best female tennis player. Not only was she the best, but she was rather dominant.

Suddenly, Henin decided to call it a career during the summer of 2008. Many were shocked by this revelation, as there was simply no reason for her to retire. After all, it’s not as if she was slowing down.

Her retirement had everything to do with the fact that she simply grew tired of the lifestyle that comes with that of a professional athlete. The training and the grueling schedule had taken their toll on this champion.

This would allow her to focus on both her charity work and her tennis school, as she took pride in training the many talented young kids who came to her school.

Andy Roddick comes into the 2009 US Open at a crossroads of his career.

Roddick has played some great tennis this past summer and many believe the former US Open champion has revived his career. Much of this is due to the fact that Roddick has spent a great deal of time on his fitness.

On the other hand, the US Open marks the end of another season, as the prime of his career slowly slips away as he still looks to snap the longest US men’s Grand Slam drought in the open era.

At year’s end, he’ll be 27 years old. While he currently stands 5th in the world, three of the four ahead of him are four years younger or more. The other? Roger Federer, who has had a rebirth of his own to coincide with Roddick. In fact, Federer has been the thorn in his side for years.

Andy Roddick is at an inflection point as far as his career is concerned. The 2009 US Open could dictate where his career goes from here.

On one hand, he has seen the rebirth of his talents, leading him to arguably his best season in a while thanks to being as fit as he was when he won his only major in 2003.

At the same time, Roddick is aging and the clock is ticking on his career. His role in men’s tennis is crucial right now, as he’s really the only player who stands a chance to bring the US its first grand slam since Roddick captured the championship in 2003.

When looking at the rest of the top-5 players, aside from Roger Federer, they’re all at least three years younger than Roddick. There’s a good chance that each of these players will maintain his level of play, and quite possibly improve. With respect to Federer, it seems that he’s found his form once again.

Past world No. 1 Rafael Nadal will face Fernando Gonzalez during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open later today.

After a diversity of issues that he might not be fully recovered from a knee wound that kept him sidelined for the majority of of the summer, he has proven critics mistaken with some great play during the first four rounds of the tournament.

Nadal’s knee injury required him to miss Wimbledon in July, a tournament that he won in 2008. Unable to defend his finals and having missed some other events, Nadal lost his world’s #1 status to Roger Federer, who took advantage of Nadal’s hiatus with a win at Wimbledon.

Nadal additionally lost the world’s number ranking to Andy Murray, however recaptured it with his 4th round win at the US Open two nights ago.

Nadal has seemed to be performing at near his top echelon in this tournament as he outdid Frenchman Gael Monflis in four |sets in the 4th round, looking as quick as ever during the match.

Juan Martin del Potro. Many forget to mention del Potro when speaking of top contenders, but his potential on the hard court is undeniable. Del Potro won 23 straight matches last summer, capturing four tournament victories in a row leading straight up to the 2008 US Open, besting any teenager in tennis history except for Rafael Nadal.

Del Potro reached the quarterfinals at least year’s open, but was stopped short by Andy Murray in a four set nailbiter. Murray went on to advance to the finals. This is all an indication that an improving Del Potro can’t be overlooked at this year’s tournament.

Andy Roddick: Andy Roddick is realistically the only American hopeful at grand slam events, and has remained that way for quite some time. For a long time, Roddick often occupied the 5-8 seeds, although such a high seeding was virtually meaningless given the dominance of top 3 players Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Federer has since experienced some shakiness, Nadal has struggled with injury, and Djokovic’s mental game has affected his performance, thus opening the door for players like Roddick to make a measurable impact.
