One of the world’s oldest (and largest) tennis tournaments, the US Open has been held annually since 1881. This is the fourth and final tournament of the Grand Slam tour and is held beginning in late August and concluding in early September. There are championship events in the following categories which are held at the US Open: Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. IN addition, the tournament features Seniors, Juniors and wheelchair events.
Unlike the other Grand Slam tournaments, the winners of the events which make up the US Open are the players who win the final set tie break, rather than the best of five for men’s events and best of three for women’s.
Even though it does not draw the crowned heads that one may see at Wimbledon, this is a tournament with a lot of prestige attached and the event draws thousands of spectators from every part of the world as well as many locals. With more than $20 million in prize money awarded in this tournament, it’s easy to see why over 600 players compete in this tournament each year.
The US Open is held in Queens, New York at the Flushing Meadows-Corona park USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The court is not held on turf or grass like you would expect at the Wimbledon. This tennis court is made of acrylic.
US Tennis Open Winners receive prize money for their victory. The singles tournaments for men and women give cash prizes to many different people in many ways. This is what makes the US Open a big reason that people want to play. That is because there is a bigger chance for people to go home with money at this tournament in the Grand Slam than any other tournament. The winner receives $1.5 million, runners-up receive $750,000, Semifinalists receive $320,000, quarterfinalists receive $160,000, round of 16 receives $80,000, third round wins $46,000, second round wins $30,000, and the first round wins $18,500. You can win a big prize even if you do not make it all the way as the final winner.
US Open doubles events winners also are awarded sizeable prizes. The winners of the doubles events split a $1.8 million prize and there is $500,000 at stake in mixed doubles. There is even about one million dollars to be won in the 128 draw men’s and women’s qualifiers, for a total of more than $20 million total in prizes!
With so much to be won and the prestige of competing in a Grand Slam tournament, professional tennis players are always interested in this tournament. There are prizes given to the winners in many different events, giving players a much better chance to go home with a prize than in other tournaments; this generates a lot of excitement among fans as well, which makes this tournament incredibly popular year after year.
